Teacher Trainer and Teaching English in France Expert

After more than 20 years of teaching languages (English and French), I have decided to share my experience and specific knowledge of the French education system with foreign language teachers in France. Indeed, over the years I have found this job as exhilarating as it can be taxing and I have always wished for more cooperation among teachers. We can at times feel lonely and overwhelmed by the task, especially in a country whose cultural codes we do not always fully grasp.

As a language teacher in France, you might have already wondered about :

  • the specific relation between student and teacher in France,
  • what is expected from a teacher (dos and donts)
  • cultural questions like the impact of ‘laïcité’ and the importance of grades,
  • the grading system, how to make it easier for you and fair, and more importantly how to use grades to make you an ally for your student instead of a judge.
  • Managing teacher-parents meetings

Good news ! There are answers to these questions and I will cover them this year to help you gain confidence, diminish stress and become more efficient in your professional practise.

Most of the time, your problems at work are systemic rather than personal. I have learnt this over the years, speaking with hundreds of teachers who shared the same concerns. Like you, even as a French teacher, when I started I was completely lost and felt that information was hard to find, that I had no or little guidance and that I had a strong impostor complex. I don’t think we ever get rid of this feeling, but with time and so much positive feedback from students, colleagues and parents (and good grades for my students at exams ), I have accepted that we need to appreciate the work that we do more than what still needs to be done. My goal now is to help other teachers be happier in their professional life and enjoy this wonderful job by making it that much easier.
